MILAN (AP) — Premier Silvio Berlusconi combined his duties as a statesman with those of a defendant on Monday, welcoming the news of Osama bin Laden's death as he arrived in court to defend himself against tax fraud allegations related to his media empire.
"I believe it's a great result in the fight against evil, against terrorism; it's a great result for the United States and for all democracies," Berlusconi said. He expressed concern about the possibility of reprisals.
Near the close of the nearly four-hour morning session, Berlusconi explained to the court in closed-door proceedings how TV rights are bought and sold, defense lawyer Niccolo Ghedini said.
