NSW: Intellectually disabled man sent to jail for teen's murder

SYDNEY, Aug 1 AAP - An intellectually disabled man previously found unfit to standtrial has been sent to jail for the brutal murder of an Albury teenager.

Kim Meredith, 19, was murdered in March 1996 in Albury, on the NSW-Victorian border.

A part-time bar worker, Ms Meredith died from deep knife wounds to her throat and herbody was found naked, but for her socks.

A jury convicted Graham Edward Mailes, 30, from Forbes of Ms Meredith's murder in 1999and he was sentenced to a minimum 18 years imprisonment.

But the conviction was overturned on appeal.

Another jury last year found him unfit to stand trial on the grounds of his intellectualdisability.

However, a special hearing held earlier this year found him guilty of the 1996 murder.

In sentencing today, Chief Justice James Wood said Mailes had shown no contrition orremorse for the "brutal and predatory killing".

He sentenced him to 25 years in jail to be reviewed every six months by the MentalHealth Review Tribunal.

Outside the court, Ms Meredith's father Bob criticised the authorities for the sevenyears it has taken for the case to be completed and said the lack of motive continuedto distress his family.

"He's still in denial, I guess that's the thing that hurts the most," he told reportersoutside the court.
